Degrees

 

Modern Language Requirements for Bachelor of Arts Degree

To qualify for a Bachelor of Arts degree, students must complete at least twelve  hours in modern language courses. Four three-hour courses in one language or two three-hour courses in each of two languages will fulfill the requirement. The foreign culture courses numbered 101 do not count toward this requirements.

Foreign Language Requirement for General Education

Students are required to complete one semester of foreign language study as part of their General Education Requirements. Courses in the student's native language are not permitted for enrollment; instead, students are encouraged to develop proficiency in a language different from their own to broaden their worldview. Requests for transfer credits from other modern language courses may be submitted to the humanities division for review.

Placement Test

If you wish to enroll in a Spanish/French course and already have some knowledge of the language—whether from study or life experience—you must schedule a placement test. This test has an oral, written, reading, and listening part to check your level. The results of these evaluations will determine the course level for which you are eligible to register.
