CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR JASON GARRETT TO SCREEN HIS ORGINAL MOVIE ‘TO FLY' SEPT. 7
By Rachel Crenshaw, student news writer
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.—Dr. Jason Garrett, associate professor of mass communication at Campbellsville University, has produced, directed and edited, along with performing many other titles and jobs, his own original movie “To Fly.” The movie will be screened for a test audience at Vineyard Christian Fellowship church, Monday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. The Vineyard is located at 105 Pleasant Drive, Campbellsville.
Garrett said the purpose of the screening is to have a test audience and to raise money for upcoming costs such as taking the film through the sound design stage and the color balance stage. He said these stages could be fairly costly; therefore, the screening is a chance for people to give a tax-deductible donation if they so desire.
Garrett said, “The film is about two strangers running from a past that eventually catches up to them.” He said the film is meant to capture the idea of redemption in an uncharted way.
He said a majority of the film was shot in 14 days at the Grand Canyon where the cast and crew spent about $2,000 in gas, props, food and lodging. Many meals were also provided from the Campbellsville University Winters Dining Hall by the CU Office of Finance and Administration, Garrett said, to the cast and crew.
The two leading actors are Kayla Gill and Tristan Erwin, who will be present at the screening. Garrett said the auditions for the film were held in April and May and led to a cast from Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee.
Garrett said the film would have to be accepted into a legitimate film festival before it can have an actual premiere.
Garrett received his Ph.D. in communication from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., in May 2008.
Garrett has been a mass communication professor at CU since 2003. He received his master's degree in communication from Regent University in 2001 and his bachelor of arts in theater arts from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C., in 1998.
Garrett resides in Campbellsville with his wife, Starr, instructor in theater and director of the theater program, at CU, and they have one son, August.
