CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -Senior Matthew Schmuck and the rest of the Maroon Goons pep club
are preparing to kick off the Campbellsville University Homecoming weekend with a
football rally on Friday, Oct. 10 at 9p.m.
The Fighting Tiger Football Team will be featured at the start of the rally, followed
by student-led games, music, and other activities.
All students are invited to attend the rally, which will take place behind the Student Activities Center. The first 40 students who arrive will receive a free 2014 Homecoming “Let the Good Times ROAR!” maroon T-shirt, sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Maroon Goons are calling for a maroon-out for the football game on the following Saturday at 2 p.m., when CU will be taking on Georgetown College.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary since the Vietnam War and the 75th anniversary of World War II, the Maroon Goons are also partnering with Student Activities and constructing a float to honor local veterans from various wars.
“If I was going to work on any float, I would've wanted it to be this one. I'm thankful that we have the opportunity to recognize some of our community's bravest soldiers.” Schmuck said.
“It's a cool experience for me because my grandfather served in World War II, and my dad served in Vietnam. In fact, I'm the first male in the last four generations of my family that hasn't been drafted for a major war,” Trent Creason, director of student activities, said.
Schmuck and Cody Wills founded the Maroon Goons in 2010.
“When it comes down to it, we're a pep club, except we like to say that ‘pep' stands for promotions, entertainment and pride. One of our largest focal points of the Maroon Goons is campus collaboration,” Schmuck said.
The Maroon Goons are looking to branch out and partner with other CU organizations throughout the school year, like the Student Government Association and the Baptist Campus Ministry.
“Think of the Maroon Goons as the hyphen in the phrase ‘student-athlete,' because we started this club to help bridge the gap between the classroom and the playing surface,” Schmuck said.
