CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Katie Mynette Speer, born and raised in Campbellsville, has an exhibit of her quilts in the Pence-Chowning Art Gallery on Campbellsville University's campus located at 205 University Drive, Campbellsville, KY 42718. The exhibit is open to the public until Feb. 20, with a reception on Feb. 12 from 3:30-5 p.m.
“These quilts are comforting to lie under, or when you are not using it, you can put it across the back of the chair and enjoy the beauty of it,” Speer said.
One of Speer's quilts was the first quilt ever accepted by the Coca-Cola Art Show in Elizabethtown, Ky.
Speer's grandmother, Nellie Campbell, was an expert seamstress and Speer's father, Billy Logan Speer, designed machinery for the textile industry. Speer grew up around fabric but does not consider herself to be a seamstress. Each of her masterpieces takes years of work to be complete.
Speer will not be selling any of her heirlooms at this art show, but she will have smaller pieces that are for sale.
Speer is not only a quilter, but she is also a singer, musician, composer and author. Her first book “Poetry, Prayers and Pondering” will be on sale at the art show. She will also be selling her CD of original piano music.
