CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville University welcomes Dr. Schuyler Robinson, University of Kentucky professor of organ and sacred music, on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 12:20 p.m. in Ransdell Chapel, 401 N. Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville, for the first Noon Organ Recital for spring 2014.
Robinson will entertain with six pieces of music including a tribute to Leonard Bernstein.
The recital is free and open to the public and will be finished by 12:50 p.m.
The recital is on the 1894 Farrand and Votey Pipe Organ enlarged and rebuilt by Moller, Pilcher and Milnar Organ Companies. It has three manuals, pedalboard and 51 ranks.
Robinson has served as professor of organ and also harpsichord at the University of Kentucky since 1982. Prior to serving at the University of Kentucky, he was the professor and college organist at Warren Wilson College, Asheville, N.C. for 13 years. He has served as organist and choirmaster at churches in Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina and Kentucky for 50 years.
He has appeared as adjudicator, recitalist and clinician at numerous local chapter meetings and several regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists, several terms as dean of AGO chapters in North Carolina and Lexington, Ky.
As an organ recitalist, he has performed primarily in the United States and in five countries in Europe, Costa Rica and Taiwan. In a five-decade career as church organist, he served for 20 years as assistant organist at Christ Church (Episcopal) Cathedral in Lexington.
This tenure has incorporated weeklong performance residencies with the Lexington choirs in the cathedrals of England, including Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's in London; also in Canterbury, Ely, Bristol, Lincoln, Peterborough and Norwich. His United States highlights have included Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and San Francisco, as well as two CD recordings with the Cathedral Choirs.
Robinson's collaboration in the DiMartino-Robinson Trumpet-Organ Duo has taken performances to some 22 states and Australia/Tasmania and produced a CD recording, “The Art of the Transcription.” A new publication by Alfred Music features the Duo's original transcription of “Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition for Trumpet and Organ.”
Recently Robinson has released a CD titled “A Kentucky Organ Tour: 9 Historic and Modern Organs of the Bluegrass.” Six of these organs were featured in a 2011 AGO Regional Convention in Lexington, Ky.
At the University of Kentucky, Robinson teaches organ to bachelor of music, master of music and doctor of musical arts students and chairs the Master of Music in Sacred Music program at U.K. that merges music and seminary courses and is drawing regional interest form church musicians in voice, organ, piano and choral conducting.
Schuyler's wife, Linda, is also involved in music. She is an early childhood music and movement specialist and teacher trainer for Muskigarten of Lexington. Muskigarten is an early childhood and music education center for children and teachers.
