CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University will be host to Marc Hyden, advocacy coordinator with Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty of New York, on Tuesday, April 21 at 5 p.m. in the Banquet Hall of the Badgett Academic Support Center at 110 University Drive, Campbellsville.
Hyden's address is with CU's Kentucky Heartland Institute on Public Policy (KHIPP) and his topic is: “The Conservative Case Against Capital Punishment.”
Dr. John Chowning, founder of KHIPP who serves as CU's vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president, said there is increasing concern among conservatives, as well of people of political identity about the death penalty.
“Regardless of one's position on the death penalty, we need to have an ongoing dialogue on this very important issue - and in particular among people of faith.
“Marc Hyden brings an emerging perspective among conservatives who are concerned about the implications and possible inequities in the death penalty in the 21st century,” Chowning said.
Chowning said Hyden will address his concerns from a number of perspectives, including moral concerns about the death penalty, inequities in the administration of the death penalty, expense of extended death row appeals, perception of overreach of big government, advance of DNA evidence with improved science and technology, etc.
“This promises to be a very engaging and lively discussion of the death penalty,” Chowning said.
Hyden was the campaign manager of a Republican congressional race in Western North Carolina and has served as the legislative liaison/public affairs specialist with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security and as the legislative aide to the Georgia Senate President Pro Tempore. He recently came from the National Rifle Association where he served as a campaign field representative in Florida.
