CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Sarah Smith of Brownsville, Texas, will feature her senior artwork in The Pence-Chowning Art Gallery March 20-24.
Smith will show drawings, printmaking, 3D design, photography, graphic designs and ceramics. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
She will have a reception in her honor Monday, March 20 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in the gallery.
Smith will graduate in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in graphic design.
She has also exhibited at the Tim Faulkner Gallery in Louisville and Campbellsville University's Juried Student Art Shows in her freshman, sophomore and junior years.
Smith had much to say about the difference one will see in her work.
“In the gallery, you might notice that some of my work has a different signature. I was struggling to find myself and who I wanted to be. Growing up a military child, I had to move from place to place.
Always starting over. Wanting to fit in with others, I changed my personality and who I was around people. This constant change eventually affected how I signed my work, and I was never satisfied,” she said.
As her work has changed, Smith said the university has “really helped me to find myself, especially in the last two years here.
I have come to embrace who I am and what I like, and to incorporate that through my work aesthetically.”
She has found a true passion for skate art. “During my time at this university, I discovered skateboarding through a friend. When I was younger, I had always wanted to try but I was too scared—so what better time than now.
“I instantly loved it.
“Even though I'm not good at it like some people, all that matters is that I try and try and try.”
In the gallery exhibit, she has a room that has work you would find in a local skate shop. This room contains skate decks, skate stickers and T-shirts.
“My dream is to one day own a skate company and have my products in skate shops around the U.S.,” she said.
In the other room, she has drawings of skulls in pastel colors.
“While working on these, I had discovered a color palette I really enjoyed. I also used this palette to liven the general thoughts of skulls from death - to happiness instead.
“This also stems from my Hispanic heritage relating to ‘Dia de los Muertos' which translates to ‘Day of the Dead' - a day where you remember and prepare food in honor of those who have departed, which tends to be more of a party than a funeral.”
The gallery is open during the following hours: Mondays, 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and noon until 5:50 p.m.; Tuesdays, 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and noon until 4 p.m.; Wednesdays, 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. and noon until 5:30 p.m. and Fridays, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
