CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The School of Music and the Honor's Program will be co-hosting a guest lecture by Dr. K. H. Han on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 8:00 p.m. in Gheens Recital Hall. The title of Dr. Han's lecture is “Bamboo in Asian Culture.” The lecture will focus on the role of bamboo throughout Asia with an emphasis on musical instruments.
Han will bring along several examples of Asian instruments as well as a display of bamboo carvings, paintings, toys, and daily objects (pencil holder, chopsticks, etc.).
On Friday, Oct. 12, Dr. Han will speak to Dr. Mary Wilgus's class on East Asian History at 9:00 a.m.
Han is Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus, School of Music, Northern Illinois University and now visiting fellow, Asia Center and visiting professor at the School of Music, University of Kentucky.
He has been teaching world music, Chinese and Southeast Asian musical instruments over thirty years. He has performed Asian music with students and given workshops in many colleges and scholarly conferences. He is a member of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, Music Educators National Conference, Association for Chinese Music Research and served as chair or adviser to some of them.
As an author, he has contributed articles in Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd edition), Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (Far Eastern volume), Encyclopedia Britannica, Routledge Encyclopedia of Contemporary China, Association for Chinese Music Research Reports, Multicultural Perspectives in Music Education (ed. by William Anderson & Patricia Campbell; MENC), Musics in Many Cultures (ed. by Elizabeth May; University of California) and has published 12 books in Chinese.
Both programs are free and open to the public.
