CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University is showcasing the art of Bowling Green artists Lynn and Claude Robertson in an art exhibit on campus through Oct. 1 at the Art Gallery, 205 University Drive, Campbellsville. Their work includes paintings, painted constructions and mixed media.

A closing reception in their honor is Oct. 1 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Art Gallery. The reception and gallery are free and open to the public.

Lynn Robertson has been an artist for as long as she can remember. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Indiana University at South Bend. She has worked as a cultural arts coordinator at a hospital in South Bend, Ind. for 30 years. For the past seven years, she has been the Gallery Director of the Capitol Arts Alliance in Bowling Green. She also has run a gallery in Mishawaka, Ind.

She works in oils, pastels and mixed media.

She has won purchase awards at the U.S. Bank show, the Women in the Arts Exhibit, as well as a number of other awards. Her work is in many collections around the country including states such as Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, South Carolina and Kentucky.

She said, “I love seeing and doing art. I try to give the viewer a slightly different point of view, a pause to a passing world. We see history, we see religion, we see society through art, we see objects and people in art. Art portrays beauty, emotion and understanding of the world and of life, pausing us to think. The way to better vision is through art.”

Claude Robertson, Lynn's husband, studied painting with Harold Zisla at Indiana University at South Bend, where he received a bachelor of science degree, and with Jim Borden at the South Bend Art Center. He considers visits to major art museums around the world and large art libraries to be a continuation of his art education.

His collection of awards includes first, second and third place painting and first place in works-on-paper in past U.S. Bank shows. He has also won awards at the Scottsville Art Guild, the ArtWorks competition and the All Kentucky Juried Exhibition at the Capitol Arts.

His work is showcased in Jerry Baker's collection at the Baker Arboretum as well as in private collections in many states including Michigan, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and Kentucky.

He said, “To make a mark in the sand, or on the wall of our cave, has been one of man's most primitive instincts. It is our way to capture our lives, our world and the way we feel.

“For me painting has been my way of making that mark, first for years of painting on canvas in an effort to paint the beauty and joy I've felt in my life. More recently I've been moving off the canvas with shapes and paint to free the work and find the true and emotional side of my mark. But still the art of painting brings the most joy, and happiness flows from the end of a sometimes battered brush.”

In addition to the exhibit at CU, they have their work in the All Kentucky Juried Exhibitions and the Trans Financial Bank Exhibits. At these two exhibits they have won several awards including merit awards. They are also being showcased in U.S. Bank Exhibits, The Gallery at 916, and two personal exhibits at the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce and Gallery on the Square in Franklin, Ky.
