CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University students will be participating in National Professional Social Work Month by attending a social work rally at the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort Wednesday, March 2 and also meeting with legislators.
The theme of the month's celebration is “Social Workers Change Futures.”
Debbie Carter, assistant professor of social work, said there is a large group of students going to Frankfort from CU's main campus as well as a group from Somerset.
“This is a good example of how our two campuses are trying to work together to make sure the students get the same opportunities,” she said.
Carter said the students will meet with Rep. Bam Carney, and participate in the “Lunch with Legislators” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and then continue to the rally at 1 p.m. which will feature comments from Gov. Steve Beshear; Janie Miller, Cabinet for Health and Family Services secretary; Pat Wilson, Cabinet for Health and Family Services commissioner; Rep. Susan Westrom; Rep. Jim Wayne; Margaret Hazlette, Kentucky Board of Social Work chair; and a social work student.
Everyone is invited to attend this ceremony to show their support for the social work profession. The rally is scheduled to be over at 2 p.m.
National Association of Social Work-Ky. Chapter leadership and members of the state board of directors will be available for comment before and after the rally.
The 2011 Social Work Month theme promotes the role of social worker as a positive change agent. NASW Executive Director Elizabeth J. Clark, PhD, ACSW, MPH says that NASW and its chapters will use this theme as a cornerstone to promote the message that social workers improve the fabric of society by serving as advocates for people who need help addressing serious life challenges. She said there are 640,000 professional social workers in the United States who have dedicated their careers to either helping people transform their lives or improving environments that make such change possible.
