Fire Code Inspector, Fire Department, Bowling Green, KY

DUTIES: Inspect various types of buildings including new construction for code compliance and violations; perform oversight of and participate in inspections performed by shift personnel by reviewing their inspections and assisting when necessary; follow up on complaints, code judgments, and inspections, and make decisions about alternative solutions to fire code violations corrections; review plans for new construction and sprinkler plans for content, accuracy, and to prescribe alternatives to maintain Fire Department access; inspect for and issue burn permits; calculate and inspect occupancy loads; evaluate the capacity of storage tanks and alternative water sources for firefighting tactics. Interact with building contractors on building codes; consult with businesses on life safety; review with property owners violations of fire codes and Kentucky safety standards; work with plan reviewers, architects, engineers, developers, and builders to review plans and system requirements; help train firefighter recruits on inspection issues and codes; update firefighters on codes issues. Work with and assist the Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Prevention/Education Specialist.

REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or GED required, (Associate degree with Fire Science course emphasis is preferred). Two years of experience/knowledge in building construction and codes, fire safety codes, and plan review, including the ability to read blueprints, plans, and plats. Employee must be able to meet minimum training requirements provided in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard 1031, and obtain NFPA Inspector I and II certification (or equivalent) within a reasonable period of employment. Possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must become knowledgeable of the City’s geography and related laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.

SALARY: $50,126 ($24.09/hour), plus full benefits package

WORK HOURS: 7:30 am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime possible
