Interpretation Internship, Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park, Student Conservation Association Hodgenville, KY, 3/21/16

Job Description:

Interpretation Internship available at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park located in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Individual chosen for this internship will work within the Division of Interpretation and will work as a front-line point of contact with the visiting public. Individual will work at the park’s information desk in the visitor center, greeting visitors, orienting visitors to the park, providing information and directions. Individual will also work at the park’s Memorial Building where the Symbolic Birth cabin is located. Will relay information about the early life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Will also work at the Boyhood Home Unit at Knob Creek which is located 10 miles from the Birthplace Unit. Individual will also be responsible for developing and presenting formal interpretation talks and guided walks at both the Birthplace and Boyhood home Units at the Park. Individual will receive training on the principles and concepts of Interpretation and instruction on how to develop and research their own programs. History of the National Park Service, park organization and park history and orientation will also be provided. Individual will work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day including weekends and holidays. (40 hours a week). Must enjoy working with people, enjoy history and is expected to work well with others and be team player.

Individual will live in park housing and MUST bring a car with them.

  • Location Description

Park is located in Hodgenville, Kentucky. It is located about 55 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky in a largely rural area. Nearest shopping, restaurants and other facilities are located in Elizabethtown, Kentucky which is approximately 15 miles away.

  • Training Provided

Individual chosen for this position will be given training specific to the position. During the training, the individual will learn about the park and its history as well as meet and work with park staff.

  • Educational/Recreational Opportunities

Some recreational opportunities are available in Elizabethtown. Very limited number available in Hodgenville.
