CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University has received a $480,000 grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation Inc. that will allow the completion of the Hawkins Athletic Center, according to Dr. Michael V. Carter, president of the university.
“We really appreciate the James Graham Brown Foundation’s grant which will allow for improvements in the human performance academic program of the university,” said Carter.
The Hawkins Athletic Complex is a 22,000-square-foot facility, which was
started in 2003.
The university has completed the exterior, and the grant will allow for the completion of the 11,000-square-foot second floor. The bottom floor consists of football and baseball locker rooms, an all-sports weight room and offices for coaches.
Two classrooms, a multipurpose room, a conference room and eight faculty/staff offices will be constructed on the second floor of this facility.
The classrooms will be used for health and physical education classes as well as for other classes across the curriculum. The large multipurpose room will have dividers so the room can be used for one large group or divided into three smaller areas.
The office space will allow the health and physical education faculty to have offices located in the same building where their classes are being taught. The conference room will be used for small group advising sessions and faculty/department meetings.
Completing the second floor of the Hawkins Athletic Complex requires constructing interior walls, wiring and plumbing, floor coverings, technology infrastructure, equipment and furnishings.
The Hawkins Complex will become handicapped accessible with the installation of an elevator.
“Since 1986, The James Graham Brown Foundation has awarded Campbellsville University grant monies totaling $2.4 million, including $1.5 million over the last five years,” said Carter. “We are so thankful for their belief in higher education, and their commitment to helping us fund our human performance area.”
The James Graham Brown Foundation Inc. was established under a trust agreement in 1943 and formally incorporated in 1954. James Graham Brown was a lumberman, horseman and entrepreneur with the majority of his wealth being made in the timber industry. He died in 1969 with no heirs leaving the bulk of his estate to the Foundation.
The mission of the James Graham Brown Foundation is to foster the well-being, quality of life and image of Louisville and Kentucky. The Foundation does this by actively supporting and funding projects in the fields of civic affairs, economic development, education, and health and general welfare.
Foundation grants are limited to the Louisville metropolitan area and the state of Kentucky.
