William D. Ritter is an Assistant Professor of Public Relations, joining Campbellsville University in January 2016. He is an integrated communication marketing specialist, with over 26 years of combined civilian and military mass communication experience, with twenty-nine years of Army leadership expertise (14-years active duty, 15+ years reserve forces). He’s a Bronze Star Award recipient and combat veteran of the Iraq War, and continues to serve in the Army’s Reserve Component as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Ritter received his Bachelor’s in Communication (Graphic) Design from Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA in 1990 and his Master’s in Business Communications, with Public Relations and Advertising Specializations from Ellis University, Chicago, IL in 2010. He also holds minors in photography and military leadership from Kutztown University. Ritter is a doctoral student at Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA, pursuing a PhD in Communications. He holds military degrees in photojournalism and Public Affairs from the Defense Information School, Fort Meade, MD and is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS.
Colonel Ritter originally hales from Lancaster County, PA. Prior to entering the Active Army in December 2002, he worked in advertising and marketing as a graphic designer/visual communication specialist at various corporations in south-central Pennsylvania. Ritter’s military assignments included: Acting Chief of Army Reserve Public Affairs in charge of the marketing, PR and promotional efforts for an organization the size/scope of a Fortune 50 company. He was also served as publicist for the Commanding General, handling all media relations and speech writing for the senior-most officer in charge of a 200,000 plus origination.
Over the last 23 years, Ritter was awarded 21 military and corporate awards for personal excellence in public affairs and graphic design and has guided others to another eight awards. He has been married to his wife Cheryl since 1991, and has four daughters.
Outside of academia, Ritter enjoys golfing, drumming, photography, target shooting, motorcycling and family activities. Additionally, he is involved in various church, community, military and veteran’s groups, and is the faculty advisor for Campbellsville University’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter (prssa.prsa.org).
