“For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles;
in every place incense shall be offered to My name, and a pure offering; for My name shall be great among the nations,” says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 1:11 NKJV)
Dear Pastors and Church Leaders,
You are cordially invited to our annual SOT January Bible Preview on August 4, 1:00 PM. “Malachi: Complacency Exposed” is the book and theme of the 2017 January Bible Study in the last book of the Old Testament, Malachi. The verse above is a sure word of hope from the prophet Malachi. However, he has words that sting and shake and challenge. Nothing is really known about the person of Malachi, other than his name means “My Messenger.” His prophetic style is Q&A. His prophetic calling card—stamped in each of the gospels—is “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me” (Mal. 3:1). His prophetic prescription is to “turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers” (Mal. 4:6). The church of Jesus Christ needs like never before to hear the words of “My Messenger.”
The leader of this year’s study is Dr. Todd Borger, associate professor of Old Testament & Hebrew at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Wake Forest, NC). He and his wife Timberly are former missionaries with the IMB; Dr. Borger has served as a passionate professor of OT at SEBTS since 2009.
Every year the SOT leads a “JBS Preview.” The JBS is observed in many Baptist churches as a way to devote several days or weeks to concentrated study of the Word of God (it’s winter: what else you gonna do?). The preview has been a way for the SOT (for over 30 years!) to provide an overview, as well as teaching helps, for those who may plan on teaching the book at some point. The preview is also an opportunity for Bible Study teachers, Sunday School teachers, and dedicated laypersons to sit under powerful teaching of the Word of God.
The JBS Preview of Malachi will be held Thursday, August 4, 1:00-8:00 P.M., at the Banquet Hall in the Badgett Academic Support Center. Registration and fellowship begin at 12:30 P.M. Cost is only
